This workshop explains certain areas of taxation relating to partnerships/LLPs and their partners. It also covers potential planning opportunities and an update of the tax changes that have happened/are happening in this area.
Outcome: Delegates will have a greater knowledge and understanding of the taxation of partnerships/LLPs and their partners. They will also have an up to date knowledge of the tax changes affecting such entities at the current time.

Opening-up the legal profession: the risk and regulatory consequences

This workshop brings a practical perspective to the reforms heralded by the Legal Services Act 2007 including the revised Solicitors' Code of Conduct, international issues, regulatory arbitrage, LDP status and the ASB regime, firm based regulation as well as the impact of third party funding on insurance premiums, alternative sources of insurance funding and future models.
Outcome: Delegates will be able better to understand the challenges presented by the Legal Services Act 2007 and the regulatory and risk consequences.

Moving Out: transforming an in-house team into an out-sourced provider

This workshop considers the growing interest in “outsourcing” and considers:
• Why it is sometimes appropriate for an in-house department of a professional firm to acquire a separate existence
• The possible formats/structures for that separate existence
• The challenges to be overcome to achieve successful separation
• The role of the existing “parent” firm
• The demonstrated benefits
Outcome: Delegates will be:
• better able to advise clients on the practicalities and benefits of separation of in-house departments
• better placed to support them through such a process.

Partnership Disputes: Arbitration and Mediation
Chair: Peter Garry (Cripps Harries Hall LLP)
Speakers: Christopher Berry (Edwin Coe LLP) and Philip Howell-Richardson (Independent Mediators Limited)
This workshop informs attendees and encourages debate on the relative advantages and disadvantages of using arbitration and mediation respectively to resolve partnership disputes (particularly professional practice disputes), what can be achieved with each method that perhaps cannot be achieved with the other (or Court proceedings), common experiences and pitfalls, and why mediation works.
Outcome: Leaves attendees with a better understanding of the relative merits of resolving a dispute through Court proceedings, arbitration and mediation, and some of the pitfalls and problems that can arise.

Legal Services Board: The story so far

Speaker: Chris Kenny (The Legal Services Board)
This workshop updates participants on the forthcoming regulatory changes overseen by the LSB including those proposed by the Solicitors Regulation Authority and the Bar Standards Board. The objectives are to make participants aware of these changes and to be in a position to consider and advise both internally and externally on these issues. As the LSB is the key regulator their views and perspective on the new regulatory regime are important for all involved in this area.
Outcome: Participants will be fully up to date on developments in relation to the regulatory regime and on the LSB’s perspective as how it and the various other regulators including the SRA and BSB are responding to the challenges created by the Legal Services Act.
